The 10 Safest New Cars to Buy

Southern California has a lot of cars, and that means we have a lot of car accidents.

Safety remains an important selling point for many consumers when searching for the right car to buy. We are looking for state-of-the-art features that can ensure their safety on the road. For example, Electronic Stability Control, or ESC, automatically reduces speed and can brake individual wheels as needed if it senses an impending rollover. A study outlined on NBCNews.com performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that ESC can reduce the risk of fatalities in single-vehicle crashes by more than 50 percent, lowering the likelihood of a rollover accident by 80 percent.

Other safety features like air bags are also a concern for many. According to a recent NASDAQ report, there were a record number of auto recalls in 2016, due in large part to the ongoing Takata airbag recall. Although used car prices are down these last few months, analysts predict new car sales this year will remain at around 17 million vehicles.

Analysts also predict a small increase in new car sales in 2017, with some of that attributed to all the cars damaged due to Hurricane Harvey in September. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, estimates show the number of vehicles damaged in Texas is between 300,000 and half a million.

6. Genesis G90: A top-rated vehicle when it comes to larger luxury cars, this model has plenty of driver assistance features as standard that are only optional on other models, such as automatic emergency braking systems for detection of pedestrians.
7. Volvo V60: Standard safety features include City Safety, a low-speed automatic emergency braking system, but the real crowning glory is the available HID low-beam headlight system. Not only can it illuminate past corners but it can also switch on to high beam mode automatically.
8. Subaru Legacy: Boasting advanced driver assistance and advanced safety systems, this model uses cameras on the windshield to monitor road conditions in real time.
9. Nissan Maxima: Enjoying a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, many safety features come standard, plus available features such as the automatic emergency braking system that operates via a radar signal to monitor road conditions.
10. Lexus RC: This two-door coupe scores high marks in predicted reliability so you can expect a long lifespan out of this vehicle. It features Lexus Safety Connect, which sends notifications to nearby first responders when an accident happens.
